Baseball picks up pair of wins over Lourdes

(Adrian, MI) Concordia Baseball hosted the Lourdes Gray Wolves at Siena Heights Sunday afternoon. Concordia benefited from great pitching performances, only allowing one run to the Gray Wolves. The pair of wins kept the Cardinals undefeated in conference play.

Game 1: Concordia 2, Lourdes 0

Tyson Kleinfelter pitched a complete game shutout in the seven-inning game. The pitcher only allowed 7 base runners, with three of them coming in the final inning, a jam that he pitched his way out of. He finished the day with 9 strikeouts on the mound.

The Cardinals only had two hits in the game, but were able to string them together in the bottom of the fourth for what would be the game winning runs. Drew Fleming got things started with a walk which was followed by a Jordan Sherman single up the middle. It was then Caleb Harmond with a double down the right field line that scored Harrison Ryan (pinch running for Fleming) and Sherman.

Game 2: Concordia 10, Lourdes 1

Bryon Mane started on the mound for the Cardinals and pitched five innings, only giving up one earned run and striking out four. Kenneth (Dave) Rozmys relieved Mane in the sixth inning, pitching his way out of a jam with two strikeouts. Rozmys stayed in to pitch the remainder of the game, getting a four inning save with his 6 strikeouts.

The Cardinals opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third inning when Jarrett Batanian stole home in a double steal. Not long after Aaron West and Jordan Sherman both drove in a run each to put the Cardinals up by three.

Lourdes responded with a solo shot in the next half inning, but the Cardinals scored four of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Once again, Jarrett Batanian got the scoring started, this time hitting a solo home run to center field. The Cards then got a string batter on base with a single, three walks, and hit pitch, which scored two runs. Jordan Sherman had a sacrifice fly to score their fourth run of the inning, and grow the lead to six.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Jordan Sherman had another sacrifice fly to bring home a run. Later in the inning, the pinch running Harrison Ryan scored on an error to put the Cards up by eight. Jarrett Batanian walked home a run to grow the lead to nine.

The Cardinals will be back in action Monday, April 3rd for another home doubleheader against Lourdes. The games are set to take place in Ann Arbor, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM.
